Hyssop was used in the Passover, in the purification of lepers, and in David’s great psalm of repentance. It represents God’s power to cleanse, purify, and make new. At the crucifixion, a sponge of vinegar was lifted to Jesus on a hyssop branch (John 19:29), connecting Old Testament cleansing to the ultimate purification through Christ.
