The History of Anointing Oil from Ancient Israel to Today

The practice of anointing with oil is one of the oldest spiritual traditions in human history. From the olive groves of ancient Israel to modern prayer rooms around the world, anointing oil has served as a bridge between the physical and the spiritual for thousands of years.

Ancient Origins

The earliest references to anointing oil date back over 4,000 years. In ancient Mesopotamia, oils were used in religious ceremonies and healing rituals. But it was in ancient Israel that anointing oil took on its deepest spiritual significance.

God instructed Moses to create a holy anointing oil from specific ingredients: myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, cassia, and olive oil (Exodus 30:22-25). This sacred formula was reserved exclusively for consecrating the Tabernacle, its furnishings, and the priests who served there. Using it for any other purpose was strictly forbidden.

The Age of Kings and Prophets

As Israel transitioned from judges to kings, anointing oil became central to the coronation of rulers. The prophet Samuel anointed Saul as the first king of Israel, pouring oil over his head as a sign of God's selection and empowerment. Later, David was anointed — first privately by Samuel, and later publicly by the elders of Israel.

The prophets also used anointing oil to commission their successors. Elijah anointed Elisha as the next prophet of Israel (1 Kings 19:16), passing on the mantle of spiritual authority.

Anointing Oil in the Time of Jesus

By the time of Jesus, anointing with oil was deeply embedded in Jewish culture. It was used for hospitality (anointing the heads of dinner guests), healing, and worship. Jesus himself was anointed multiple times — most famously by Mary of Bethany, who poured costly spikenard oil on his feet as an act of profound devotion.

Jesus sent his disciples out to preach and heal, and Mark 6:13 records that "they anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them." This practice continued in the early church, as James instructs elders to anoint the sick with oil and pray over them (James 5:14).

The Early Church and Medieval Period

The early church adopted anointing oil as part of its sacramental life. Anointing was used in baptism, ordination, and healing prayers. By the medieval period, the Catholic Church had formalized the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, using blessed oil to comfort and pray for those who were ill.

Anointing Oil Today

Today, anointing oil is used across denominations and traditions worldwide. Pentecostal and charismatic churches use it regularly in healing services and prayer meetings. Many believers keep anointing oil in their homes for personal prayer, blessing new residences, and spiritual protection.
