Myrrh bookends the earthly life of Jesus. It was among the first gifts laid at His feet as an infant, and it was the last substance applied to His body before burial. No other element in Scripture so powerfully traces the arc of Christ's journey from incarnation to sacrifice. Understanding myrrh is understanding the costly love of God.
What Is Myrrh?
Myrrh is a resin harvested from the thorny Commiphora tree, which grows in the harsh, arid regions of the Middle East and Africa. To obtain myrrh, the tree's bark must be cut — wounded — and the resin that bleeds out hardens into the precious, aromatic substance that has been treasured for millennia.
Even the way myrrh is produced speaks prophetically: something precious flows from a wound. Something healing comes through suffering. This is the story of the gospel encoded in nature itself.
Myrrh in the Old Testament
Myrrh was one of the ingredients in the holy anointing oil that God prescribed in Exodus 30:23 — the first ingredient listed, in fact, underscoring its importance. It was used in the purification of Esther before she came before the king (Esther 2:12), symbolizing preparation and consecration.
In the Song of Solomon, myrrh appears repeatedly as a symbol of love, intimacy, and devotion. The lover's hands drip with myrrh (Song of Solomon 5:5), and the beloved is described as a "bundle of myrrh" resting close to the heart (Song of Solomon 1:13). Myrrh represents something precious held close — a love that costs something.
Psalm 45:8, a royal wedding psalm that the early church understood as pointing to Christ, declares: "All your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia." The King of Kings carries the fragrance of sacrifice.
The Gift of the Magi
When the Wise Men presented their gifts to the infant Jesus (Matthew 2:11), each gift carried prophetic meaning. Gold honored Him as King. Frankincense acknowledged Him as God. And myrrh? Myrrh foretold His death.
It may seem strange to give a funeral spice to a newborn. But the Magi, guided by divine wisdom, understood something profound: this child had come to die. The myrrh whispered of a future cross, a borrowed tomb, and a love so deep it would embrace death itself for the sake of the beloved.
Myrrh at the Cross and Tomb
At Golgotha, Jesus was offered wine mixed with myrrh as a pain-dulling agent, which He refused (Mark 15:23). He chose to bear the full weight of suffering without relief — a conscious decision to drink the cup of sacrifice to the last drop.
After His death, Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds, to prepare Jesus' body for burial (John 19:39). This extravagant amount — fit for a king — honored the One who had given everything. The myrrh that greeted Him at birth now accompanied Him in death, completing the circle of sacrifice.
The Fragrance of Costly Love
Myrrh teaches us that the most precious things often come through suffering. The tree must be wounded for the resin to flow. The grain of wheat must fall to the ground and die to bear fruit (John 12:24). And our Savior had to endure the cross for the joy set before Him — the joy of redeeming us.
When you use myrrh anointing oil in prayer, you carry the fragrance of this costly love. You connect yourself to the story of a God who gave His most precious gift — His own Son — so that you might live.
Using Myrrh Anointing Oil in Your Devotions
Our Frankincense & Myrrh Anointing Oil combines the two most significant resins of Scripture in a single, sacred blend. It is especially meaningful during:
Communion and remembrance: Apply before taking communion as a way of meditating on Christ's sacrifice.
Good Friday and Easter: Use during the Lenten and Easter season as you walk through the story of Christ's passion and resurrection.
Prayers of surrender: When you are laying something down before God — a dream, a fear, a burden — myrrh reminds you that God understands the cost of surrender, because He paid the greatest cost of all.
From the manger to the cross, myrrh tells the story of love that does not hold back. May its fragrance remind you every day of the One who gave everything for you.
