Anointing is “setting apart”, when God anoints something or someone, He sets it apart, what is then anointed is “holy”, separated for His use. The term anoint means to smear or rub with oil, to apply oil to, as a sacred rite especially for consecration. Whenever God raised a king or priest in Israel, that person was anointed with oil. When a king or priest was anointed in the Old Testament, the prophet would take a horn full of oil and pour it over their heads. That person, was “set apart” to be used as God’s instrument.
Sanctified and Consecrated
Moses poured anointing oil on Aaron’s head to sanctify him, “and he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him (Leviticus 8:12).” Samuel anointed King David with anointing oil, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward, “Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward... (1 Samuel 16:13)”.
Prayer and Anointing
According to the Book of James, the Holy word of God tells the faithful, that the sick should be prayed over and anointed with oil in the name of the Lord, with the prayer of faith saving the sick, and the Lord will raise them up. “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven, (James 5:14-15)”. Jesus’s Disciples casted out many devils, anointed many of those who were sick healing them, “And He called the twelve to Him, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits … And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them, (Mark 6:7,13)".
The Shepherd's Anointing
Anointing with oil, derives from an ancient practice seen with shepherds protecting and keeping their sheep alive. Ectoparasites, or external parasites such as lice live on or within the skin and wool of sheep, once these ectoparasites traveled to the sheep’s head, their destination of choice often included the ears, where they entered and very often lead to the death of the sheep. To prevent this, shepherds would anoint the head and wool of the sheep with oil, creating an uninhabitable viscous surface for ectoparsites, this life saving practice became synonymous with the blessings, and protection bestowed upon us through our Ultimate Shepherd, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the Book of Psalms, David declares “thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over, (psalm 23:5)”; this suggests that God, in His provision of love, protects us from anything causing harm and blesses us abundantly.
Jesus tells us “if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’, and it will move; nothing will be impossible for you, (Matthew 17:20). We are reminded, “God has dealt each one a measure of faith, (Romans 12:3)”
With the measure of faith given to us by God, anoint your body, your family, your house, your business, your finance book, or any aspect of your life that requires God’s favor, as an act of consecration and dedication, by setting it apart for God’s purpose, because the favor of God is upon you, speak and claim without doubt, prosperity and blessings andbegin to see the positive changes in your life.
